Career History

Keiko Yamamoto is an accomplished journalist and former NHK commentator known for her expertise in gender and equality issues.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in Education and a master’s degree in International Development from Nagoya University, she began her career at NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) in 1995.

Over her tenure, she reported from Kanazawa Broadcasting Station and later contributed to NHK WORLD JAPAN, NHK's international broadcaster. In 2019, she was appointed Deputy General Manager of the News Department at NHK's Nagoya Broadcasting Station.

From 2021, as an NHK commentator, Yamamoto led discussions on gender issues through her segment, the "KY Journal," where she provided insightful commentary on social challenges, earning widespread praise for her approachable explanations of complex topics.

Beyond broadcasting, Yamamoto has been an active advocate for female journalists. In 2001, she founded a study group that now includes over 1,000 members, working to drive social change in areas such as education, work style reforms, and gender equality. Recognized as a leader in Asia, she was named an Asia21 Fellow by the Asia Society in 2009.

Yamamoto has also co-authored influential works, including “Could You Step Aside? Is the Media Delivering Women's Voices? and “Before Pressing the Like Button: Internet Space and Media from a Gender Perspective”.

She balances her professional life with motherhood, with her daughter currently attending high school.
